The fine performance of Roman legionaries in combat with Pyrrhus’ soldiers likely confirmed their belief that the critical qualities in battle were the killing power and endurance of their men, not fancy tactics. The standard Roman battle tactic, in essence a straight-ahead infantry rush at the enemy, could be turned against them by a canny enemy general, as Hannibal would do most spectacularly at Cannae in 216. Over the course of the long and drawn out wars with Carthage, Roman superiority in land battle would be blunted only at times, albeit dramatically, by the tactical prowess of Carthage’s best commanders.
It is an understatement to say that Roman victory in the wars with Carthage had profound consequences for all future history. Roman law would prevail as the source for most European legal codes, even until the present day. Greek philosophy would be ensconced as the dominant mental model for understanding the world. Indeed, not least among Rome’s accomplishments was that it made the world safe for Hellenism even as it would eventually conquer, and be conquered by, Greece. The subsequent history of Europe, after the fall of the empire, was influenced strongly by the memory of Rome.
One group of them, the Latins, would go on to produce the most powerful of Italy’s communities, and all other Italic languages would ultimately become extinct. The foundation of the city of Rome on the Tiber River has been dated by tradition to 753 BC. Actual habitation of the site long preceded that date, and true urbanization had to wait until sometime later. ² The Romans could name only seven kings who were said to have ruled in the monarchical period of about two-and-a-half centuries, and thus had to give each ruler an almost impossibly long reign.
